Sonic Farm Pre-Amplification
Sunday, 11 September, 2016
For quite some time now there has been a buzz amongst more than a few of my musician colleagues in Vancouver about the amazing Sonic Farm pre-amplification technology built right here in the region by Boris Drazic and Zoran Todorovic. The rave was that one would simply not believe how much of a cut above other high-end preamps these amazing devices were.
I recently recorded my 4th solo album and was fortunate to record using Sonic Farm's Berliner, Silk Road and the 2DI4 pre-amps. In the past I've gotten great results recording my Morgan Acoustic Guitars and vocals with whatever quality preamps the various studios are equipped with and never had cause to complain.
When we set up my Morgan acoustic guitar (mahogany dreadnaught with solid sitka spruce top) for the current sessions, we put a coincident pair of Gefell MK71 microphones at the 12th fret and plugged those into the Sonic Farm Berliner preamps. We set up a Dave Thomas Advanced Audio CM47 just to the right of the bridge of the guitar and plugged it in to the Silk Road and last but not least plugged my active LR Baggs acoustic guitar pickup in to the 2DI4. We figured we had all bases covered. Did we ever! What we suddenly had was far and away simply the best sound I had ever achieved while recording the acoustic guitar. I simply could not pick up my jaw from the floor!
Everything else that we recorded using the Sonic Farm equipment - from Vocals, Cello, Harmonica, Electric Guitars, Grand Piano, Hammond B3 with Leslie, Vibes, Trumpet, Drums & Percussion, to Bass (both upright and electric) gave us the same jaw-dropping results: the best pure ear candy ever! And the proof is in the pudding, so to speak - my new album release sparkles and shines and all the terrific performances we captured are enhanced in such a supportive and spine-tingling manner by the best pre-amps in the world. But don't just take my word for it - one can find any number of write-ups in the top technical magazines or on Gearslutz. In fact, Mix Magazine named them innovators of the year 2015 for their amazing equipment.
This is certainly not a technical report on what Boris and Zoran have packed into this amazing gear. I leave that to the experts, who can quote chapter and verse on all things technical until your eyes glaze over. However my ears have never deceived me when it comes to making music. Try any one of these incredible pieces of equipment from Sonic Farm. You'll never go back to using any other pre-amplification devices...ever!
